Smartphone US market share Android + Apple = 85%!

As I periodically do I started researching what the trends are for the mobile smartphone market. This Nielsen report seems like an excellent summary of where the smartphone market is today.

I found this graphic in this article on CNET that was actually about how Microsoft Windows Mobile was still more deployed than the new Microsoft Phone OS( 3% versus 1.4% if you care) .
CNet harsh-windows-mobile-still-more-popular-than-windows-phone%2F&ei=ZNICUOegF6L_4QT1zPSgCA&usg=AFQjCNHvu-LdbunBTEMfaZUF_hcMjbnLdA&sig2=Kopr7F-6fvhWQu6HlqszYw

So no surprises here but sometimes its hard to get your head around that Android and Apple in the US command 85% of the smartphone market! This is a staggeringly large percentage and there seems to be no sign that this will change any time soon. Here are the numbers broken out so that they are a little easier to read  :
Android 51%
Apple 34%
Blackberry 9%
Microsoft 4.3%

  1. Great data indeed. What a shame then Nielsen messed up the graph. It's instantly visible that the dimensions on the X-axis are way out of proportion. Very deceptive if you don't look at the numbers.

  2. Yeah this is a case of form over function :) it looked nicer this way i suspect!

  3. Well, depends on your point of view, I guess. It looks more evenly distributed this way, with smaller shares for the key players and higher shares for the little ones. In reality the market is then much more dominated by a few!

  4. Agreed was why I emphasized the 85 per cent android plus apple in the title. I just retweeted an article that was titled windows mobile grows 227 per cent...factually correct but particularly relevant:)
